Nomad Skid Plate Body: Chest and Belly Coverage for Working K9s
Nov 3rd 2026
A track does not always stay on a clear path. Heavy brush, low branches, and rough debris can put a working dog's chest and underside in contact with hazards that a standard harness leaves exposed. The Nomad Skid Plate Body™ adds coverage where it matters without requiring a completely different harness.
In this installment of the Nomad series, the focus turns to a practical accessory for teams working through demanding terrain.
Added Coverage for Brush and Debris
The Nomad Skid Plate Body extends beneath the dog, covering the chest and belly to help shield those areas from branches, thorns, and abrasive debris. Its durable nylon construction creates a barrier between the dog's underside and the terrain encountered during tracking, detection work, and search and rescue.
The design balances coverage with mobility. It adds protection beneath the dog without the bulk of a separate full-body setup, allowing the team to keep working through changing environments.
An important distinction: this is brush protection, not ballistic protection. The Skid Plate Body is not body armor, and no protective accessory eliminates every risk of cuts or punctures.
Same Harness, Same Handling
The advantage of the Nomad Interchangeable Harness System™ is consistency. Adding the Skid Plate Body does not replace the harness frame or change the handler's familiar control points.
- Handles remain in their usual positions.
- Leash and tracking-line attachment points stay familiar.
- The existing Nomad frame remains the foundation.
- Coverage can be added or removed as the assignment changes.
We designed the Nomad platform around that flexibility. A handler can move from routine duty to a track through heavy brush without switching to an entirely different harness.
Attach It When the Terrain Calls for It
The Skid Plate Body secures to the Nomad system using hook-and-loop attachment points, straps routed through the designated loops, and side G-hooks that hold the coverage in position.
That arrangement makes it practical to keep the accessory with the team's equipment and install it when conditions warrant. After the task, the attachment points can be released and the plate removed, returning the dog to the regular harness configuration.
Before heading into work, handlers should check that the plate is correctly attached, straps are secure, and the dog can move freely.
Configure the Protection Around the Assignment
Not every task calls for the same equipment. The Nomad Skid Plate Body gives handlers another way to adapt a familiar platform, adding chest and belly coverage when brush and debris become part of the job.
Instead of carrying another complete harness, teams can add a purpose-built component to the system they already use.
