The Reward Tool That Won't Quit: Foam Biothane Ball Tugs
Nov 6th 2025
We’ve added a new training tool to our catalog: foam biothane ball tugs from Grey Dog's Design. They’re designed for working dog handlers who need durable, easy-to-grip reward options. These balls combine the appeal of foam construction with the durability required for serious training environments.
Tested for Real-World Durability
Before adding these balls to our product lineup, we put them through rigorous testing with handlers working particularly tough dogs. The concern with foam products is always longevity, particularly with powerful dogs that can destroy standard training equipment quickly.
The testing feedback confirmed what we needed to hear. The balls show tooth impressions after use, but the foam itself doesn't break apart or separate from the biothane handle construction. This durability makes them viable options for regular training use, not just occasional rewards.
Two Sizes for Different Training Applications
The foam biothane balls are available in two sizes to accommodate different dog breeds and training preferences. The smaller 2.75-inch option works well for compact storage and dogs with smaller mouths, while the 3.5-inch size provides a more substantial reward for larger working dogs.
Both sizes feature the same construction quality. They have hard foam cores that resist destruction while maintaining the tactile appeal dogs respond to during reward-based training.
Smart Handle Design
The knobby biothane handles represent thoughtful engineering for handler convenience. Woven directly into the ball construction, these handles provide exceptional grip even in challenging conditions. Whether hands are wet from slobber, rain, or cold weather, the textured biothane surface maintains traction for quick retrieval from ball pouches, aprons, or tactical vests.
The handle length creates important separation between handler and dog during reward presentation. Shorter handles can result in dogs crowding the handler's hand when reaching for the ball, while the extended length on these foam balls allows dogs to cleanly target and take their reward without interference.
Color Variety for Training Flexibility
The balls come in multiple color options, allowing handlers to incorporate color preferences into their training programs or simply choose options that provide high visibility in different environments. This variety gives handlers flexibility in building their reward tool collections.
Practical Applications
These foam ball tugs fill a specific niche in working dog training equipment. They're light enough for easy throwing during distance work, durable enough for repeated bite and tug sessions, and convenient enough for quick deployment from handler gear. The foam construction provides a different texture and feel compared to rubber balls, which can help maintain drive in dogs that have become habituated to standard reward objects.
