Introducing Ray Allen Barrel Tugs

Oct 29th 2025

Handlers have been requesting barrel tugs for years, and Ray Allen Manufacturing is excited to announce their arrival. These tugs represent a solution to both handler demand and manufacturing challenges, bringing a popular training tool to the Ray Allen product line.

Why Barrel Tugs Took Time to Develop

Barrel tugs have surged in popularity over the past few years among working dog trainers and handlers. The demand was clear, but the production challenges were real. Traditional barrel tug construction methods proved time-consuming and difficult to manufacture consistently at the quality standards we require.

The solution came through material innovation. By incorporating leather on the non-bite surfaces of the tug, we found a way to streamline production without compromising durability or performance. The leather sides provide structural integrity while making the manufacturing process more efficient, allowing these tugs to move into full production.

Two Sizes for Different Training Needs

The barrel tugs come in two distinct sizes, each designed for specific applications. The standard size measures 8 inches by 4 inches and features two handles on each side. This compact configuration makes it perfect for storing in vests, ball pouches, aprons, or other handler gear. The handles provide solid grip points without excessive length that could create unnecessary movement or distraction during training sessions.

The larger option, measuring 12 inches by 5 inches, offers significantly more bite surface for dogs that need bigger targets or handlers working on grip development with larger breeds. Both sizes maintain the same design philosophy: clean construction with practical handles and ample bite area.

Design Benefits and Practical Applications

The leather side panels serve multiple purposes beyond production efficiency. They create clean surfaces for branding, with each tug featuring the Ray Allen logo. More importantly, the leather provides durability in the areas where dogs aren't actively biting, extending the life of the tug while keeping costs reasonable.

The handle placement on both sides allows handlers to work from multiple angles and switch grip positions quickly during training sessions. This versatility makes barrel tugs valuable tools for building drive, improving targeting skills, and maintaining engagement during repetitive training exercises.

Thoughtful Product Development

Quality gear takes time to develop right. These barrel tugs weren't rushed to market, they were engineered to ensure consistent manufacturing and reliable performance in real training environments.

The addition of leather side panels represents Ray Allen's approach to manufacturing challenges: when a product presents obstacles, find a better way to build it rather than abandoning it altogether.
